What is GRE
GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION - GRE® is a computer Adaptive test (CAT) and is a pre-requisite for admission into different Master’s and Doctorate programs in the U.S. It is a competitive examination and requires extensive preparation. It helps students in achieving admission and scholarship in various US Universities. The test is given year-round at various official testing centers, it is recommended that one must register for a test 45 days prior to the test date.
The GRE testing program includes a General Test as well as Subject Tests in disciplines such as Biology, Psychology and Mathematics. It depends upon the requirements of an individual and his aspirations that which test is to be taken
What is CAT
CAT is the contemporary format for all types of exams, and GRE is no exception. Earlier GRE was a paper based exam, but as for now, it is computer based.
In the CAT format of the exam the computer chooses problems based on a candidate's responses to previous questions. This makes the CAT "adaptive" or "interactive". CAT selects questions according to each candidate's ability. The questions are broadly classified as easy, moderately difficult and very difficult. Because the CAT is interactive it uses fewer items and takes less time to administer than the paper-based version.
Simply putting, the computer has access to a large number of test items classified according to question types (antonyms, reading comprehension, graphs etc.) and arranged in order of difficulty. At the start of the test the computer presents the examinee with "seed" questions, items of average difficulty level. If these are answered successfully then the program selects for the next question an item of greater difficulty.
On the contrary, if the "seed" questions are not answered successfully, then the program lowers the difficulty level by selecting a question from the lower difficulty range. Needless to say that because of such an adaptation it is very important to start the test with greatest accuracy.
The Analytical Writing Measure is an exception to this rule, since it is an essay based section. The test taker has 45 minutes to write an essay answer to an "issue" topic and 30 minutes to write an essay answer to an "argument" topic. These essays are then evaluated by an examiner and a grade is awarded depending upon their merit.
What Kinds of Questions are on the GRE?

Revised GRE features new types of questions based on current market demand and as required by B-Schools and other Graduate schools to judge and compare right skills and aptitude of candidates from all over the world.
